With a few of the big sports I watch out of season (NFL, MLB), I have to keep myself busy in preparation for their upcoming seasons. Now, Basketball and Hockey are all the rage. Luckily, I live in Michigan, where both sports are fairly big.
So, here’s what’s going on with my teams this evening.
B-Ball
At 7:30 PM ET, the Detroit Pistons take on the Milwaukee Bucks. They are playing at The Palace tonight. Should be an interesting game since the Bucks have won their last two and the Pistons have lost their last three.
Other games you might want to check out:
Charlotte Bobcats vs. Orlando Magic – 7:00 PM ET
San Antonio Spurs vs. New York Knicks – 7:30 PM ET
Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies – 9:00 PM ET
LA Clippers vs. Phoenix Suns – 9:00 PM ET
LA Lakers vs. Atlanta Hawks – 10:30 PM ET
I came across a meme on a blog run by a guy named Steven Taylor. The Meme directions are pretty simple.
First, you list the Top Ten Sports Moments you recall seeing in person or on the television. Second, list where you saw them.
Sadly, I was born in 1980, so I missed many great sports moments before then. However, I’m considering asking my 90 year old Grandfather to share his top ten for me, so I can share them with you. He was into sports and could have gone pro boxing or in track and field. His brother also played minor league baseball, and missed out on a chance at the pros (he had an audition with our Detroit Tigers) due to injury. He saw Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig play live, and I’m sure my memories can’t hold a candle to his.
Anyway, here we go!
1. June 12, 2007 – Justin Verlander throws a No Hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers to Pudge Rodriguez (who consequently has caught for more than one No Hitters in his illustrious career). I wish I could have been there, but I saw this one on television. What a momentous win for Justin Verlander and for the Detroit Tigers! I remember watching all his shining moments live on FSN Detroit with Rod and Mario at the Helm.
2. Desmond Howard’s Heisman Pose in 1991 – After returning a 93 yard punt during the OSU-Michigan rivalry game, the announcer happened to say “Hello Heisman” just as Desmond posed a la Heisman. It was the longest punt return in Michigan history. It was also one of the great victories as he led UM over OSU 31-3. This was the first year I “came out” in a OSU household as a UM Wolverine fan. I watched this game with my die-hard OSU fan/father who refused to talk to me throughout the entire game.
Okay, the real reason my posts are so slow is because I’m working on a re-design for this website. I know I should try to get a few more posts up, but come next week, this won’t be an issue. I’ve missed discussing the Tigers woes, my opinion on Rich Rodriguez and my Wolverines, and the decline of the overrated Ohio State Buckeyes. Have no fear my fellow readers…
I (and my commentary) will soon be back with all the sarcastic wit an snarkiness you love to hate.
Now, on to my week three picks. I hope you enjoy them and please feel free to post your own picks in my comment section! I’m looking to award a gift of some sort to the person who posts the most accurate picks this NFL season, so to win that prize, get posting!

Carolina vs. Minnesota
Winner: Carolina
While Carolina almost didn’t make it last week, I’m sticking with em!
Kansas City vs. Atlanta
I’m betting my money at Atlanta. The Chiefs suck and Atlanta has seen some success with their QB pick, Matt Ryan.
Winner: Atlanta
Oakland vs. Buffalo
I underestimated both Buffalo and Oakland last week. Buffalo beat a semi-decent team while Oakland took on another sucky team. Guess who wins?
Winner: Buffalo
Tampa Bay vs. Chicago
Tough pick considering both seem to be mediocre teams.
Winner: Chicago
Houston vs. Tennessee
Though I don’t like either teams, this one is a no-brainer.
Winner: Tennessee
Cincinnati vs. NY Giants
I’d love for the Bengals to prove me wrong, but I’m going with the “smart” choice.
Winner: NY Giants
Miami vs. New England
The Patriots managed to hang on for just long enough to win without Tom Brady the last game, but their luck will run out when they face the Chads.
I know I’m almost a day late and a dollar short, but the games haven’t begun yet. I had a busy week. I apologize and promise to start posting with more frequency soon. I’m working on an overhaul for this site, so expect many new things cropping up in the next few weeks.
That being said, let’s get to my picks!
Note: I don’t have much time to write about each team. Just know I haven’t underestimated those teams that made something of themselves last week.

They lost one, they won one, they lost one. The Detroit Tigers went 1-2 against the Los Angeles Angels after sweeping the Texas Rangers. Both series were played at Comerica Park. After clinching his first victory of the season against Texas on April 22, Justin Verlander returned to the mound to take on the Angels. Unfortunately, Verlander hasn’t had a very productive season. He lost his first four games, and unfortunately this game made it number five. The Angels manage to get the best of Verlander as the Tigers lost 2-8.
Justin was able to keep the Angels from scoring throughout the first three innings. The Tigers looked dry the entire day, with very little in the way of hits or any productivity in both an offensive and defensive manner. The first inning had both teams going down 1-2-3. Justin managed to go 5 2/3 innings and his opponent, Jared Weaver went 6 1/3. The only difference is Justin gave up some runs and Jared was more interested in giving up walks.
In the second, Jared walked two Tigers after Justin shut down the Angels (allowing just one hit before retiring three) though the Tigers weren’t able to capitalize on this or even get a hit. The third had Justin walking one though he retired three without much trouble. The Tigers had two walks and both Curtis Granderson and Jacque Jones were out when Granderson was picked off on base and Jones was caught stealing.
In the fourth, Torii Hunter hit an RBI triple, sending Casey Kotchman home to score. Justin was able to keep the score 1-0 in that inning, but not for long. The Tigers got their first hit in the fourth, when Miguel Cabrera singled. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to do much more than that. In the fifth, a sacrifice fly by Erick Aybar led to Maicer Izturis coming home and the Angels now led 2-0. Jared Weaver was able to retire the Tigers in a 1-2-3 inning, in the bottom of the fifth.
Some fans may be disappointed by the Detroit Tigers for not making it to the post season. While many injuries plagued the team this year (including pitcher, Kenny Rogers), there were many personal accomplishments that made for some excellent baseball being played all around. From Magglio Ordoñez to Cameron Mayben (whose first major league hit was a home run off of Roger Clemens), nearly every player on the Tigers team did something spectacular this season.
The Tigers finished the season in second place for the AL Central Division, just behind the Cleveland Indians. Finishing with an 88-74 record just wasn’t good enough this year, so after beating the Chicago White Sox, in the last game of the season, the Tigers bid the baseball world adieu, at least until March or April when Spring Training begins.
This year, the Tigers, not just as a whole, but as players, did not get the credit or appreciation they deserved. Many personal achievements were reached and there will be mention of at least one of them in the record books…Magglio Ordoñez. Mags won the AL batting title this year. While everyone was blathering about how great it was A-Rod got some homeruns, Magglio was busy helping his team out with his massive, batting average and nearly errorless fielding.
Psychology major and sprinter for Mississippi, Rodney Lydale Lockhart, was found dead in his apartment on Saturday where he had been shot to death near the campus of Ole Miss. Lockhart was just 20 years old and was a junior at the college.
Lockhart was a part of the 1,600 meter relay team in the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing. The team won a gold medal for their performance in the race.
The Oxford police arrived at Lockhart’s apartment in the morning hours on Saturday after they received a 911 call. Apparently in the call, a man said that he found the college student on the floor. Lockhart was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner, Lonnie Weaver.
The Bills are having a terrible season and who could blame them. The tragedy with Kevin Everett and the possibility that he may never walk again would shake any team. Our thoughts are certainly with him during his physical therapy and hopefully some sort of recovery.
Recently a news station was reporting that Everett was able to move his arms and legs. This news is excellent but it would have been a little bit better had they showed the right guy in the right wheelchair. Instead they showed a guy being wheeled into court who had a fit. Wow, that was the wrong move. I guess all people in wheelchairs look the same to them. (more…)
