The first day of May had both the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Red Wings playing playoff games that would advance them to the next level. The Pistons played a 4-2 series in the first round of the NBA playoffs while the Red Wings swept the Avalanche in a 4-0 series in the second round of the NHL playoffs. The Wings previously beat Nashville in the first round.
The Pistons beat the 76ers 100-77. Their MVP was Chauncey Billups, who had played well the entire first round of the playoffs. Billups went 8 for 11 scoring 20 points. He had 3 rebounds and 7 assists. Choosing an MVP was a hard decision considering how well Pistons shooting guard Richard Hamilton played. In the first quarter alone, he outscored the entire 76ers team.
Hamilton hit his first five shots and scored a total of 13 points for the quarter. For the game, Hamilton went 9 for 14 scoring 24 points in total. He had 2 rebounds and 5 assists. Forward Tayshaun Prince also did his part making 5 out of 6 shots. He scored 12 points and had 7 rebounds with 4 assists.
The 76ers just couldn’t recover from the early assault by the Pistons who owned the game from the first moments of play. Their MVP of the game was Andre Iguodala. He only scored 16 points while Andre Miller scored 11. These were the top scorers for the 76ers who lost the playoffs at the Wachovia Center in Philly. This had to be a disappointing game to play at home.
In the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings owned the Avalanche in a game that started at 10:00 PM for fans in Detroit. The game was played in Colorado, with the Avalanche fans feeling the same disappointment as the 76ers. It’s never any fun losing at home. The Red Wings beat the Avalanche in four straight games with the last game the fiercest fought as they took Colorado in a 8-2 victory.
In the first, Mikael Samuelsson scored the first goal for Detroit within the first five minutes of the game. This was quickly followed up by one of the two goals scored by Colorado. In a power play, Tyler Arnason evened up the game 1-1. In the later half of the first, Detroit scored two more goals, one by Tomas Holmstrom and one by Johan Franzen.
The second was the period of Detroit. All four goals for the period were scored by Detroit. Johan Franzen had two goals in the latter half of the period while Henrik Zetterberg scored two at the beginning. With a 7-1 lead going into the third, the Wings were relatively silent until 8 minutes into the quarter when Mikael Samuelsson scored Detroit’s final goal. By then the Avalanche didn’t have much hope of coming back. The Red Wings let them get another goal when John-Michael Liles scored, but by then the damage had been done.
The Red Wings are waiting to find out who they will play in the third round of the NHL playoffs. The winner will be chosen from the winner of the Dallas-San Jose playoff series. The Pistons will take on the Orlando Magic at the Palace tomorrow, May 3, 2008 in the first game of their second playoff series.
