Psychology major and sprinter for Mississippi, Rodney Lydale Lockhart, was found dead in his apartment on Saturday where he had been shot to death near the campus of Ole Miss. Lockhart was just 20 years old and was a junior at the college.
Lockhart was a part of the 1,600 meter relay team in the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing. The team won a gold medal for their performance in the race.
The Oxford police arrived at Lockhart’s apartment in the morning hours on Saturday after they received a 911 call. Apparently in the call, a man said that he found the college student on the floor. Lockhart was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner, Lonnie Weaver.
The death is being investigated by the Oxford Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. The team at Ole Miss is naturally taking things pretty hard. The coach, Joe Walker, said in an interview, “This is an unbelievable thing, and I’m having difficulty processing it.” He went on to say, “We are deeply saddened by Rodney’s death. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rodney’s family and friends.”
